Jamie Oliver plans to run restaurant on wind power

Thursday, 7th September 2006

Jamie Oliver wants to power his restaurant in Cornwall using wind energy in an attempt to save energy and halve his electricity bills.

The celebrity chef has applied to install two wind turbines on the roof of Fifteen in Watergate Bay, near Newquay.

The turbines would be 1.8m in diameter and painted the same colour as the restaurant’s roof to avoid becoming an eyesore.

Restaurant director Will Ashworth said: “The visual impact will be very low and the environmental impact very high. The only place you will be able to see them from is the beach.”

Fifteen in Cornwall is the third restaurant in Oliver’s chain, following those in London and Amsterdam. A fourth branch is due to open soon in Melbourne.

Regular Cornwall vistor and world-famous actress Gwyneth Paltrow was spotted taking surfing lessons on a Cornish beach.

During an hour long lesson, she learnt how to stand up on a yellow beginner’s board. Onlookers were surprised to see how quickly Gwyneth has regained her shape since giving birth to second son Moses, four months ago.

One spectator commented: “She looks great. Good on her for doing something cool like that. She has an image of being quite prissy and proper, so it’s marvellous to see her being a bit more active.”

Gwyneth often takes holidays in Cornwall, the home of husband Chris Martin’s parents. She is joined in her love of the area by a growing host of other stars. They include Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan and Princes William and Harry.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes also have a holiday home in Cornwall.

Rock fans from Cornwall and Devon queued for hours on Friday morning to get tickets for a concert by chart-topping band the Lostprophets.

The nu-metal group will perform at Plymouth Pavilions on November 23 as part of its 13-date UK tour in support of its ‘Liberation Transmission’ album.

Tickets for the hyped event didn’t go on sale at the box office until 9.00am but dedicated fans queued up to four hours early to get their hands on tickets.

“Lostprophets are fantastic live and put on an amazing show,” Robert Maltby, of the Pavilions, says. “If you’ve seen them live before, you’ll know how much passion they inject into their performance which has not only been recognised here in the UK, but over in America too.”

The band, who formed in 1997, sold out its last UK tour in July.

Westlife and Status Quo concerts mean no parking at Pendennis

Tuesday, 15th August 2006

Falmouth locals will not be able to park at Pendennis Point because of two high-profile concerts taking place at Pendennis Castle, later this month.

Over 6000 fans are expected to descend on the normally-sleepy Cornish town on on 26 and 27 August for two sold-out concerts by Irish boy band Westlife and rock legends Status Quo.

Parking for motorists and residents will be banned on Pendennis Point for the duration of the bank holiday weekend, which has worried some local businesses.

But Police said the ban was needed for safety.

Emma Fox, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Having an extra 6,000 people on a bank holiday in Falmouth has the potential to cause major disruption.

“It can be very congested on the best of days at the point and extra cars trying to park in the vicinity is just unworkable.

“The restrictions are necessary for health and safety, and for park-and-ride schemes set up by concert organizers to function effectively.”
